How to speak when you’re upset

Arguments and tensions are a natural part of interactions. The real question is: Can we express ourselves in a way that increases the likelihood the other person will respond more positively?

Learn to create and use “I” messages: they focus on your own thoughts and feelings, reducing defensiveness in the listener. As a result:

  • the other person stays more open and willing to engage
  • you are being both honest and respectful
  • you increase the chances of a productive conversation
